Hermann Mena is an Ecuadorian mathematician, with contributions to applied mathematics, numerical analysis and optimal control. He studied pure mathematics at Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador. Following a Ph.D. in applied Mathematics in the same university within a joint program with Technische Universität Berlin, Germany and a postdoctoral position at Technische Universität Chemnitz, Germany; he took up a position as Associate Professor with tenure at Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador (2008). In the period 01.2013/08.2016 he was Universitätsassistent at University of Innsbruck, Austria where he completed his Habilitation in Mathematics. From 09.2016 until 12.2020 he was Professor at Yachay Tech, Ecuador where he served as Rector and Head of the Board of Trustees in the period 08.2019/12.2020; being one of the youngest Rectors in Ecuador. He was principal investigator of one the first funded research projects in Ecuador “Simulation of Glyphosate Aerial Spray Drift at the Ecuador-Colombia border” that attracted the attention of the international community due to the political conflict involved. He has taught courses in the undergraduate and PhD program in Austria, Ecuador, Croatia, Uruguay and China and he has been scientific visitor at several universities in Europe and USA including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT. Currently, he is Humboldt Fellow at Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. He is also an amateur triathlete, swimmer, chess player, scuba diver and painter.
